Shades of Autumn-Oaks...

Beautiful fall foliage doesn't come to mind when I think of oak trees.--The leaves basically turn from a dirty orange/brown to completely brown (perhaps they make the other fall colors stand-out)...  However, oaks make up the majority of trees on my property and I'm thankful for their shade, drought tolerance and longevity (they are also a home, shelter and food source to a host of wildlife).

Actually, I have always assumed that the oaks surrounding the pond on our property were Post Oak trees, but after looking at leaf-ID photos--I think these may be a red-oak variety...

My favorite--not my husband's...   i.e.-No matter how high you prune the lower branches, they will continue to droop down--making it hard to maneuver the riding lawn mower under the canopy.  The autumn leaves of this oak do turn a pretty red/orange color in the beginning of the season.  Unlike most trees, this oak holds onto its leaves throughout the winter...
