The Red-headed Woodpecker

The last time I saw a Red-headed Woodpecker around my property was back in 2005. And I wouldn't have believed that I did then, but I took some blurry photos that I saved as proof...

Last week I was watching the bluebirds perching on a fence about 1/2 mile from my house when this guy posed for a few photos! It was so exciting to see this bird that has dwindled in numbers over the years...  Hope to see more around here in the future!

  5. That is awesome! Loss of habitat is a real concern for these birds.

  8. We had a very large family of Red Headed Woodpeckers two years ago. Last year they came back, but didn't stay and the same this year. I am not sure why, but I certainly enjoy the little time we have with them. These are wonderful pictures ...

  21. We had a mama hatch 2 baby red-headed woodpeckers earlier this month {at least that's when we noticed them in a dead tree} - I hadn't seen one around here in ages. We were very happy to have them back around - and now there are 2 more of the birds in MO. :)
We are in Sedalia. Your pics are wonderful! I was only able to get really blurry unrecognizable pics. lol

  22. Hi Rebecca: At some point, your blog dropped off my Blotanical feed--which isn't surprising with the way things are going there. Anyway, I apologize for not visiting in a while. I just didn't know that you were posting because it didn't show up. (Apparently others are having this issue, too.) I'm so glad I stopped by to see your beautiful red-headed woodpecker photos!
